Shoreline Standouts
The Huntington Beach City School District is proud to honor Verleen Hart and Jen Dalton of Smith Elementary as the October Shoreline Standouts, recognizing team members who exemplify the District’s core values and commitment to excellence.

Each month, Shoreline Standouts celebrates employees who go above and beyond to support HBCSD’s mission of empowering all learners to achieve their full potential. Honorees are selected for their dedication to District goals, demonstration of the HBCSD Learner Profile traits, and the positive impact they make on students, colleagues, and the community.

Verleen Hart | Health Services Assistant, Smith Elementary

As Smith Elementary’s health services assistant, Verleen Hart makes sure every student feels safe and cared for, from those who simply aren’t feeling well to those managing ongoing health needs. When a student and family faced a new medical diagnosis this year, Verleen stepped in to help them navigate an unfamiliar routine, checking in with the student throughout the day and partnering closely with their teacher so everyone felt confident and supported. Her knowledge and steady presence reach every classroom on campus.

Verleen embodies the District’s focus on Supportive School Environments and Responsible Use of Resources, along with the Learner Profile traits of being Caring, Resourceful, and Responsible.

Her nominator shared:
“Verleen has gone out of her way to help the family navigate this whole new world and is beyond supportive to me in the classroom. She allows me to check in with her throughout the day and is always there when I need her. Verleen has made an impact in my classroom but in every class at our site. Verleen is everywhere we need her! She is highly knowledgeable and just an overall incredible person.”

What does your role involve on a typical day?
Every day is a little different! I care for students who come in with a minor or serious injury, aren’t feeling well, need their medication, or simply need a little TLC.

What do you enjoy most about working at HBCSD?
The people: our staff, students, parents, and the whole school community.

What did it mean to you to be nominated by a colleague or family member?
It tells me that the care and energy I put into my work are making a difference.

What’s a moment at work that made you feel proud?
Earning a student’s trust as he adjusted to a new health diagnosis, and helping his day-to-day life at school feel normal.

What’s one fun fact about you outside of work?
I love to craft!

Jen Dalton | TK Teacher, Smith Elementary

Jen Dalton gives Smith’s youngest learners a joyful and confident start to their school journey. Every morning, she greets her TK students outside the classroom with clapping, singing, and the biggest smile, making each child feel seen and celebrated. Her hands-on lessons build fine motor skills, communication, and self-regulation, and she goes the extra mile to ease first-day nerves for students and families alike. Drawing on years of experience across grade levels, Jen is also the first to lend a hand to colleagues with advice, posters, or anything else they need.

She reflects the District’s focus on Academic Achievement, Supportive School Environments, and Engaged Community, as well as the Learner Profile traits of being Caring and Resourceful.

A colleague described the impact she has on campus:
“Jen brings education to life for our school and its first learners. Not only are her projects full of tactile examples, but she is constantly empowering their fine motor skills, communication ability, and emotional self-regulation. I wish I were four just so I could learn in her safe and exciting environment. Her CAN DO attitude makes a huge difference at our school and in the community.”

A parent shared how Jen helped her shy son feel ready for his first day:
“She took him around her room and spent 30 minutes showing him the classroom, and then called him the night before school to tell him how excited she was to have him in her class. My son has really blossomed in her class.”

What do you enjoy most about working at HBCSD?
The supportive community. Our teachers and administration work together to create a positive environment for both students and staff, and I love building relationships with families and being part of such a close-knit school. And, of course, being so close to the beach makes working in Huntington Beach extra special!

What’s something people might not know about your job?
Just how much students love their teachers! Hardly a day goes by without me receiving a note, a drawing, or a little homemade gift. They’re never shy about telling you that you’re their favorite teacher or the ‘best teacher they’ve ever had.’ Those moments are so heartwarming and a wonderful reminder of how much our connections with students mean to them.

What’s a moment at work that made you feel proud?
Seeing my students put what they’ve been learning into practice, whether it’s following routines, becoming more independent, or mastering a new skill. Watching them grow and gain confidence is what makes these moments so special.

How would your coworkers describe you in three words?
Enthusiastic, fun, and hardworking.

What’s one fun fact about you outside of work?
I have a 4.6-pound Yorkie named Brody!
During a surprise visit from the District leadership team, each honoree received a Shoreline Standouts Challenge Coin and a certificate of recognition as a token of appreciation for their outstanding contributions.
